Oklahoma! PhotoConOKC ’22!

For a lot of photogs, it’s all in regards to the new face, particularly, as an illustration, within the vogue world. I get it. The brand new “It” younger individual, a sizzling new look, the model new designs. All good.

Me, I like to work with folks I do know and love. Tried and true. Discover a unique approach in a return go to. Construct belief. Settle in behind the digital camera with somebody who’s wonderful in entrance of it. Great.

I went to Bedford Digital camera’s PhotoCon in 2017, and met Darrin Davis, an skilled police officer and a really affable soul. He was offering safety for the convention, and once I walked in, my head swiveled, and I assumed, “I’m not leaving with out that man’s picture.”

Versus the formidable look he casts within the above picture (which I coached him into) Darrin is without doubt one of the warmest, most pleasant folks I’ve ever encountered. And the lens finds him imposing, certainly. We did this shot within the lodge foyer, surrounded by the category, turning the outer doorways blue through incandescent WB, gelling on the sunshine, and so forth. Easy.

Quick ahead to 2022, and he was up for one more portrait! We stayed at school this time, on a black background, and used some gels and sidelight to create the under. The lighting grid for under was two Profoto B10X Plus strobes, gelled, fired by RFI 1×3 strip tender packing containers, behind Darrin, off to the edges. Entrance mild was a Profoto A2, fitted with considered one of their ingenious Professional-Clic tender packing containers, with a cloth grid entrance diffuser. Sq. format on a Nikon Z 9 with a 50mm f1.2

Switching again to a vertical FX format on the Z 9, with a 24-70mm f2.8 at f/8, we tried one other pose. Further DOF wanted for the lead arm. Identical mild grid, with the addition of an A2 fired down into the ground and bouncing off a silver Halo reflector, laying flat on the bottom. This small quantity of fill mild opens his face up a bit, and scoots some mild beneath the brim of his cap.

Then, I requested Darrin to offer me the look as if he had pulled me over, and he’s arrested me earlier than, and he is aware of me, and right here I’m going once more, entering into hassle. You realize, the “Critically?” look.

We closed off our session with the Eric Williams, one of many managers of Bedford Digital camera, doing his finest impersonation of a Loopy Eddie industrial from the 70’s, seen up prime because the banner. Eric’s tall, so I used to be fortunate to have an apple field on the set!

Oklahoma was a hoot! Nice people, nice studying and educating atmosphere. Hats off to the entire workers at Bedford’s, and to Nikon for supporting an exquisite digital camera retailer.
